Final Report

this report will would’ve been divided to 2 sections for 2 of the songs, however, since my song was not finished due to unfortunate events i will only talk about my role as the creator and skip the rest.

over all my the song that i created was very messy, i came up with the 2nd verse on the spot. because (at that time) i thought i did not have enough time. as for the beat, it was very basic, i chose 2 pianos in the background and one electric guitar, it felt empty but i thought it would give the producer a lot of space to work on.
Id say it was a nice time challenge for me to write the lyrics and to do the beat, i need to work harder on my beat game during the break.

As For michael’s Song, what i received from him was incredible, though the vocals were not so great, he previously recorded the vocals and the singer wrote her own lyrics, i did not like the way she performed it nor he did, i tried changing the singer, i posted an ad ( on my IG and Tinder…) , and managed to get only 1 to record it, in the end it was not her key, it was very challenging for me to get a singer within the first 2 months because i did not know many, so instead of changing the singer again i worked on the 1st vocals, because i thought i can bring something out of it, i finished it all and it was sent to Dennis .

Due to unfortunate events, Denis’s Headphones Got broken in china and had to finish the song using his laptop Speakers, which is a terrible idea but we had to meet the deadline, specially when sometimes it happens with many online work projects, some members of the team wouldn’t be as responsive as you want them to be, the results were as anybody would expect from a laptop speakers. the EQs were wrong, the stems that i have sent already had EQ on them though, i think it would have been better to borrow another set of headphones.

when it comes to Hannah’s Production, it sounded like a simple song. a happy song that did not rhyme. it was a great challenge for me because i never even tried listening to such songs, it only had i tried to understand what i can and what i can not do as a sound engineer, because there were some stuff that i wanted to add but i couldn’t. i understood from Hannah that i had the freedom to make it sound however i want to make it sound. i took 2 reference songs and began working on the session. since i could not add anything, i used EQ and filters to change how the song sounds :
1- EQ on the bass and cut some of the high frequencies to change how it sounds
2- light flanger on the piano
3- coloring filters on the other instruments
the vocals had to be changed drastically, thankfully Hannah did not mind that change, so i applied alot of filters to make the vocals sound different and feel a little closer to the other instruments. the Drums were all in a single stem, i couldn’t apply stuff to it to make it sound better so i was careful with the EQ. i worked my way around it by muting the drums in some places. the singer was singing with a very low tone at the start of the 2nd verse, so i muted the drums to make it feel more fitting that he did it with a low tone. i do not know what i did right or what i did wrong on her stems because i got very surgical with it. they called the song “outside” but i’d call it frankenstein.

in the end, am glad i worked on the last song because i was not only learning about a genre but i also was learning about logic… it was a good way to memorize the shortcuts and make it part of my muscle memory though i still need to search for answers when it comes to other functions that i wanna do in logic, that will be my homework for the break. i can’t wait to hear your feedback and notes on what i during this semester and looking forward for the upcoming one.

Thanks for reading

Hannah’s mix Using Logic

i did not want to continue doing class work in Reaper, Though its challenging but i used logic during the final weeks to get a better understanding of it and to use an industry standard DAW, so with that out of the way, here are the details about my mix

Reference songs : Lowell – Palm Trees & Barbie Girl…

i have to say i have little knowledge about this genre started out from the drums and working my way to the Vocals. i tried to work on the vocals and make them sound better because the singer was struggling to hit some notes, i changed some tracks to stereo inorder to be able to spread them

i lowered the sound of the flute because i it had alot of delay in it and it was affecting other instruments in my mix.
as for the Vocals : (2nd screenshot shows the FX for the vocals)
i chopped the vocals because everytime he took a breath there was the noise of him closing his lips and it always threw me off.
i always go for the natural sound but for this one i had to add more colors because the natural sound was not enough to make it sound ok…

Here are the FXs used for the stems

( Q6 is the EQ that i used for the vocals)

The Description

i usually have some basic steps that i follow before i begin my process, however, i did not have enough time to do them so i had to bypass my steps in order to get the audio track by 4 pm. i was racing with time as i got the stems at 3:30 so i knew i had 25 mins to do the work and 5 mins to upload it. 1st i had to arrange the stems because it was not bounced within the track region
i double checked the arrangement my producer to confirm and go to the step 2
unfortunately i couldn’t use a reference track because it would have taken me more time to find a similar sound… i imagined the song to be from the Disney 70s era. so i tried to make it sound close to that

DRUMS :

since the kick, snare and hi hat are all in 1 stem i tried to be careful when i added eq and compressor to the drums to make them stand out but not take away the kicks or give more sound to the hi hats … i needed to tweak more but i knew it would have taken more time.

INSTRUMENTS :

what i did for the instruments is light compressing with EQ. i put a stereo imager on some of them because i did not want to pan as it was all in mono and everytime i panned something, the result made me feel like the track is empty. so i kept them in mono instead of changing it to stereo. Id say i only did a basic treatment for the instruments and it needed alot more work to make it sound better

Verse Vocals :

i started out with EQ and compressor. i adjusted the compressor to reach that natural level, if i had more time i would have edited the vocals with autotune because i feel it really needed that. then a small delay and reverb just to make it sit better between the instruments.

Chorus Vocals :
i followed the same formula for the chorus, since i was working with 2 stems for the chorus, i lowered the 2nd one and added a stereo imager just to make it sound bigger but at the same time i tried to make it unnoticeable. if i had three i would have worked more comfortably by panning them, but i had to work with what i have. i did not want the chorus to sound too big for the instruments the overall track has a chill vibe.

below is a screenshot of what i used on the stems
